چکیده

Context. Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer halo are important probes of the composition and origin of the Galactic stellar halo. Aims. We derive chemical element abundance ratios in red giants belonging to the remote (R ∼90 kpc) GC Pal 3 and compare our measurements to those for red giant stars in both inner and outer halo GCs. Methods. From high-resolution spectroscopy of four red giants, obtained with the Magellan/MIKE spectrograph at moderately high S/N, we derive chemical abundances for 25 α-, iron peak-, and neutron-capture elements. These abundance ratios are confirmed by co-adding low S/N HIRES spectra of 19 stars along the red giant branch. Results. Pal 3 shows α-enhanced abundance patterns, and also its Fe-peak and neutron-capture element ratios, are fully compatible with those found in halo field stars and representative inner halo GCs of the same metallicity (such as M 13). The heavy elements in Pal 3 appear to be governed by r-process nucleosynthesis. Our limited sample does not show any significant star-to-star abundance variations in this cluster, although a weak Na-O anti-correlation cannot be ruled out by the present data. Conclusions. Pal 3 thus appears as an archetypical GC with abundance ratios dissimilar to dwarf spheroidal stars, ruling out a direct connection to such external systems. This conclusion is underscored by the lack of significant abundance spreads in this GC, in contrast to the broad abundance distributions seen in the dwarf galaxies. Pal 3 appears to have evolved chemically coeval with the majority of GCs belonging to the Galactic inner and outer halo, experiencing a similar enrichment history.

We have carried out a detailed abundance analysis for 21 elements in a sample of four RGB stars in the outer halo globular cluster NGC 7492 (RGC 25 kpc); we find [Fe/H] = −1.82 dex inferred from Fe I lines (−1.79 from Fe II) using high dispersion (R=λ/∆λ=35,000) spectra obtained with HIRES at the Keck Observatory. Most elements show no sign of star-to-star variation within our limited sample. W...

The Detailed Chemical Properties of M31 Star Clusters I. Fe, Alpha and Light Elements

We present ages, [Fe/H] and abundances of the alpha elements Ca I, Si I, Ti I, Ti II, and light elements Mg I, Na I, and Al I for 31 globular clusters in M31, which were obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR> 60) echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance ana...

The Bizarre Chemical Inventory of Ngc 2419, an Extreme Outer Halo Globular Cluster

We present new Keck/HIRES observations of six red giants in the globular cluster NGC 2419. Although the cluster is among the most distant and most luminous in the Milky Way, it was considered chemically ordinary until very recently. Our previous work showed that the near-infrared Ca II triplet line strength varied more than expected for a chemically homogeneous cluster, and that at least one st...

Pal 12 as a Part of the Sgr Stream; the Evidence from Abundance Ratios

We present a detailed abundance analysis for 21 elements based on high dispersion, high spectral resolution Keck spectra for four members of the outer halo “young” Galactic globular cluster Pal 12. All four stars show identical abundance distributions with no credible indication of any star-to-star scatter. However, the abundance ratios of the Pal 12 stars are very peculiar. There is no detecte...

Chemical Abundance Study of One Red Giant Star in Ngc 5694 : a Globular Cluster with Dwarf Spheroidals’ Chemical Signature?

We report the abundance analysis of one red giant branch star in the metalpoor outer halo globular cluster NGC 5694. We obtain [Fe/H] = −1.93, based on the ionized lines, and our metallicity measurement is in good agreement with previous estimates. We find that [Ca+Ti/2Fe] and [Cu/Fe] of NGC 5694 are about 0.3 – 0.4 dex lower than other globular clusters with similar metallicities, but similar ...
